CDL Knowledge Tests
CDL Knowledge Tests or commercial driver’s license knowledge test is a series of written test that a CDL training applicant takes at the Department of Driver’s License Services. There are two parts of the CDL license testing process to qualify or a CDL license. There is the knowledge exam and the skills exam. The CDL knowledge tests is always taken before the skills exam. Once you have passed all the CDL knowledge tests you’ll receive your CDL learner’s permit(CDL-AP) and begin the training and preparation for the CDL driving skills exam that requires physically performing certain maneuvers in a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), a tractor-trailer truck.
There are a series of CDL knowledge tests. Depending on what class of CDL License training applicant is seeking, will determine which knowledge test will be required. All CDL license applicants take the general knowledge test and every CDL class will have additional endorsement test that will be required. For example, a CDL Class A License is a combination vehicle, (a tractor-trailer truck), so it will require the combination knowledge test. The tractor-trailer truck also requires Air Brakes test and possibly others depending on the type of trailer it will be pulling or type of cargo it will be hauling. To get clarification on the CDL classes and endorsement please see the different types and classes of CDL licenses.
The CDL knowledge tests are multiple choice questions.
Once all the knowledge test, endorsement test, skills range test and the skills road test are passed, the applicant will be issued a CDL Class A Drivers License to operate a tractor-trailer truck.
