The different Classes of CDL License

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires states to issue a CDL License to drivers according to the following classes of CDL license classifications:

Classes of CDL License

Class A CDL License – (Tractor Trailer or Big Rig) Any combination of vehicles with a GCWR of 26,001 or more  pounds provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.

Class B CDL License –( School Bus, Commercial Bus like Greyhound Bus) Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR.

Class C CDL License– Any single vehicle, or combination of vehicles, that does not meet the definition of Class A or Class B, but is either designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, or is transporting material that has been designated as hazardous under 49 U.S.C. 5103 and is required to be placarded under sub-part F of 49 CFR Part 172 or is transporting any quantity of a material listed as a select agent or toxin in 42 CFR Part 73.  Example: a Ford Focus transporting 3 sticks of dynamite for a construction company would require the vehicle to be placarded, a class ‘C” designator on their license with a hazardous materials endorsement.

A CDL Class A license is designated to operate a combination tractor trailer truck. Before obtaining a CDL Class A license you must first get a CDL AP learners permit.

Classes of CDL License are classified by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration a division of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
